Lifeguards are responsible for the safety or supervision of patrons of an aquatic facility by preventing or responding to emergencies. They are trained swimmers who give pieces of advice on safety to patrons, control misbehavior, and conduct quick water rescues. The major duty of lifeguards is to maintain swimmer safety, monitor water conditions, enforce safety rules, pay attention to swimmer behavior, issue warnings to visitors who create an unsafe environment, or assist new swimmers. Lifeguards may also be required to organize activities around a water facility, closely work with supervisors, oversee activities in or out of swimming pools,  guarantee that participants have a positive experience, for monitoring both weather and water conditions to determine any sign of danger.

Other duties of lifeguards include assisting individuals with swimming lessons, enforcing policies, maintaining order in swimming areas, rescuing swimmers, maintaining cleanliness, maintaining reports, performing first aid, resolving scheduling conflict, determining chlorine content of the water, and orienting swimmers about the activities they cannot make while on the pool or beach. To be certified lifeguards, they must be skilled in effective scanning, maintaining vigilance, and identifying any high-risk behaviors.
